We Formed Genuine Heartfelt Connections That I’ll Never Forget
Volunteering on this placement was truly a life-changing experience. From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed and supported, which helped ease my initial nerves. I quickly immersed myself in both clinical and community-based work, and every day brought new opportunities to learn and connect. I had the chance to work alongside passionate professionals in psychiatric hospitals, where I engaged with complex mental health cases and took part in therapeutic sessions and treatment planning.

The highlight of my experience was undoubtedly the time I spent with the children. From helping with homework and chores to playing games and dancing together, we formed genuine, heartfelt connections that I’ll never forget. I also bonded closely with my fellow volunteers, we quickly became like family, sharing laughs, late-night games, and meaningful teamwork.

This journey reignited my passion for psychology and solidified my goal of becoming a clinician. I’ve returned home with new skills, unforgettable memories, and a deeper sense of purpose.

The Work Experience was Inspiring
My experience volunteering in South Africa was incredibly enriching and well-supported. From the moment I arrived, I was warmly welcomed and felt immediately at ease thanks to the thoughtful care shown by the staff and community members.

The work experience was inspiring, offering opportunities to engage in community outreach, psychological support sessions, and educational activities focused on addressing abuse, HIV, and gender-based violence. It was eye-opening to witness holistic interventions that combined education, counselling, legal support, and positive behavioural change programs.

Throughout the placement, I built strong professional and personal connections with staff, fellow volunteers, and community members, which greatly enhanced my learning and sense of belonging. Working closely with children and adults allowed me to better understand the impact of social issues on health and well-being.

I especially valued the cultural insights gained through communal meals, dance nights, and everyday conversations. This experience deepened my understanding of community health and social determinants, and has strengthened my confidence in pursuing a career in public health. I highly recommend this placement to anyone looking to make a meaningful contribution while expanding their personal and professional horizons.

My Placement Offered a Rich and Varied Work Experience
Starting this journey, I felt nervous, overwhelmed, and excited all at once. The welcoming environment and strong sense of dedication among the local staff helped me settle in.

My placement offered a rich and varied work experience. I conducted one-to-one counselling sessions, supported outreach programs in local schools, and assisted with rehabilitation sessions. Observing how a psychiatric hospital operates, especially in a setting where manual systems are still used, gave me valuable insight that classroom learning alone could never provide. Working extra hours allowed me to deepen my understanding, particularly within the psychology and rehabilitation units. The personal stories I encountered during counselling sessions left a lasting impact on me, changing the way I view mental health and resilience.

Outside of work, I explored local history, enjoyed the beaches, and immersed myself in the vibrant culture. This experience has not only shaped my professional aspirations but has strengthened my confidence and adaptability for the future.

Working with the Local Communities was Inspiring
Volunteering in South Africa was an unforgettable and truly rewarding experience. From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed, the hotel was lovely, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I loved getting involved in outreach projects through the Foundation, from school talks to grief counseling sessions, and even face-painting at a children’s event. Working with the local communities was inspiring, the children were so talented and eager to learn, and every person I met was open, kind, and appreciative.

Our weekends were full of adventure too, with safaris, hikes, markets, and city tours. I learned a lot about South African culture. This experience really confirmed my passion for working with children and gave me memories I’ll treasure forever. I would encourage anyone thinking about it to dive in with an open heart, it’s truly life-changing!
