Arriving in Ghana and Meeting The Volunteers!
Upon my initial arrival in Ghana, I couldn’t help but experience a blend of cultural and environmental shock. The surroundings and the vibrant street life presented a stark contrast to what I had been accustomed to. The transition was intensified by our nighttime arrival, shielding us from the full impact of the tropical heat until the following morning. Adapting to this new environment required a bit of time, as the warmth enveloped me, and I gradually acclimated to the unique rhythm and energy of Ghana’s diverse landscape.
Discovering our accommodation proved to be a pleasant surprise. The room boasted modern amenities, featuring air conditioning that provided a welcome reprieve from the tropical heat. The basic queen-size bed, and the arrangement of sharing the room with another volunteer added a sociable aspect, fostering conversations and connections. The in-room bathroom, equipped with a basic shower and even a mirror, added to the convenience. A closet, plastic table, and chair completed the ensemble, offering a functional living space. The settling-in process unfolded smoothly, perhaps aided by my initially modest expectations. The basic accommodation yet sufficient and the camaraderie with fellow volunteers contributed to a positive start, making the adjustment to this new environment surprisingly seamless.
My initial impressions were overwhelmingly positive, thanks to Monica, who radiated warmth and kindness. Her genuine efforts made a significant impact on ensuring our smooth integration into the new environment and work situation. In those first bewildering days when everything felt a bit uncertain and unfamiliar, the support and guidance from people like Monica played a crucial role. Their assistance proved invaluable, helping us navigate the initial challenges, understand the workings of the environment, and feel more at ease during that crucial first week. Their welcoming demeanor made a lasting impression, turning what could have been a confusing experience into a welcoming introduction to our new surroundings and responsibilities.
Building strong connections with fellow volunteers demonstrates the potential for meaningful and lasting friendships. It’s heartening to know that these bonds have endured beyond their departure, highlighting the positive connections that can emerge from shared experiences, even amidst the inevitable challenges that may arise.

Volunteering on the Psychology and Mental Health Placement in Ghana
I gained a substantial amount of knowledge from Alex during our collaborative efforts in his office. We dedicated significant time to preparing various health talks, delving into topics such as suicide, substance abuse, work-related stress, and stress management. Additionally, we had the valuable opportunity to meet with patients and discuss their individual case files.
We got to go on a field trip with rehab patients. Taking the patients from the psychiatric hospital on a field trip to Elmina Castle and a hotel with a swimming pool is not only a refreshing change of scenery but also a meaningful way to provide them with enjoyable experiences beyond the hospital setting. Such outings can contribute significantly to their overall well-being and sense of normalcy.
Observing counselling sessions also stood out. Sitting in on counselling sessions at the Psychiatric Hospital offers valuable insights into the practical application of psychological techniques. Witnessing how the psychologist interacts with patients, asks questions, and draws upon past information provides a unique learning opportunity, helping you better understand effective counselling methods.
I found immense joy in forming connections with the children at the foundation, engaging in counselling sessions, and playing games with them. While it took some time for certain children to open up, after a few days, it felt as though I had known them for an extended period. This familiarity made saying goodbye after spending an extended period with them particularly challenging.
We also completed community outreach on substance abuse. We went to a small community and multiple larger schools. Engaging in community outreach programs, specifically giving presentations on substance abuse disorders to children in different schools, is a commendable effort. This proactive approach not only raises awareness about important mental health issues but also contributes to the prevention and education efforts within the community.
Standouts of the volunteering abroad
A diverse array of individuals with distinct perspectives populated the environment, yet everyone exuded a remarkable sense of cheerfulness and contentment, even though, from my perspective, they didn’t possess substantial material wealth. Initially, I grappled with comprehending their overall lifestyle, particularly how people earned a living and sourced their supplies. However, over time, I came to recognize that it’s essentially a simpler version of the lifestyle we have back home. The most enlightening aspect of my experience was collaborating with the nurse at the psychiatric hospital. They took the time to meticulously explain each step involved in patient care, including the intake and discharge processes. Additionally, they provided insights into the daily routines of patients who spent their entire day in the ward. As for the most transformative element, it’s challenging to pinpoint one specific aspect, but perhaps the profound connections I formed with the children stand out. Witnessing their boundless joy and vibrant spirits left an indelible mark, making this interaction a potentially life-changing experience.
The placement has been instrumental in helping me recognize that my future aspirations are a profession with movement and variability. The experience has been incredibly informative, and I genuinely believe I’ve gained a wealth of knowledge and insights from the overall immersion in the placement.

Adventuring Around Ghana
In the evenings, our routine typically involved having dinner around 7pm. Following our meal, we would engage in casual conversations, occasionally opting to watch a movie together or spend time reading our books. Some evenings, we took advantage of the outdoor space, either doing a workout or attending to practical tasks like washing our clothes. The choice of activity hinged on our energy levels and the overall demands of the day. It was a flexible and laid-back way to unwind and connect after our daily commitments.
We embarked on several captivating day trips during our time in Ghana. A notable excursion took us to Krokobite Beach, where we relished a meal, indulged in swimming amid the waves, and had the pleasure of meeting locals and witnessing a captivating acrobatic performance later in the evening. Our exploration extended to Accra, where we visited Independence Square and the iconic arc, meandered through Accra Mall, and dined at a Mexican restaurant. In Cape Coast, we frequented the breezy bar and restaurant situated close to the beach, immersing ourselves in multiple visits marked by beachside relaxation and spirited coconut water fights. Our time in Cape Coast also involved visits to the historic castles, where insightful tours delved into the complex history of the area. Another memorable outing led us to Kakum National Park, where we traversed the thrilling canopy walk and concluded the day with an encounter with crocodiles. Returning to Senya, we received an invitation to Tills Beach Resort, Ghana’s premier resort. Here, we luxuriated in a day of poolside and beachside enjoyment. Each of these excursions contributed to a rich and diverse tapestry of experiences, showcasing the cultural, historical, and recreational facets of Ghana’s vibrant landscape.
Tips For Future Volunteers
- Be sure to ask for additional information about preparing presentations on counseling topics for children, to better tailor the preparations.
- Wifi is intermittent at the accommodation – so you may have to rely on 4G or ask the team about a SIM card.
- Be sure your downtime pastimes don’t entirely depend on Wifi. Pack items such as drawing supplies, downloaded shows or movies, podcasts, art supplies, or board games to keep yourself engaged during quieter moments.
- Don’t bring too many white items of clothing! There is a lot of reddish sand in Ghana which can stain your clothes.
- If you’re prone to getting sick, ensure you bring an ample supply of necessary medications. Consider bringing protein powder or bars to snack on.
- If you plan to organize trips, inform local contacts like Albert or Nimrod. They can coordinate with the driver and provide information about the trip’s logistics and costs.
- Bring something to cover up from the sun, like a hat or sunscreen, as the weather might be intense.
- Consider having a small bag for essentials to keep your hands free during outings or daily activities.
- While there might not be a single “life-saving” item, these thoughtful preparations can enhance your overall experience and ensure you’re well-equipped for various aspects of your volunteer journey.
