Why the Criminology & Law internship volunteer programme is right for you

The Criminology Volunteer Abroad Placement is for students who want to live in a different social and cultural context in the heart of local communities in South Africa and Ghana.

You will work alongside a community police organisation who work closely with the police force to support communities and victims of crime, and look to identify problems with crime in their communities. You will also work with a community outreach programme who work to prevent crime.


Based in Accra you will work on criminal justice reform including, petty offenders projects, and ex-convict reintegration programmes. You will visit prisons and other social services and projects the organisation works with.


Volunteer Programme 1 – (6 weeks minimum) Child sexual abuse foundation focusing on the legal aspects including, court preparation, testimonies, medico-legal examinations, legal casework, prosecution, and diversion programme for young offenders.

Volunteer Programme 2 – Work directly with a law firm offering free legal support for migrants and refugees. Interns will do research based work and other social projects including penal reform.

You will develop an understanding of the sociological issues around crime in South Africa and Ghana, such as drug addiction, sexual abuse, poverty and violence, and work with our community project on aid relief, rehabilitation, education and awareness programmes.

During your stay you’ll be able to apply your research methodologies, gather insights and understand how people’s way of life has developed.

In addition, you will deal with everyday cases that come in, as well as follow up with closed cases and community outreach programmes. where you’ll be involved as a supporting member of the team.
