Our medical, nursing & health elective placement in Ghana provides medical students, nurses and professionals with the opportunity to gather work-experience in two locations.
You will spend half your placement/elective in a general hospital in the capital city of Accra and the other half at a health-clinic in the heart of a rural coastal village.
While at the hospital you will be shadowing a doctor in one of Accra’s biggest hospitals. Each week you will get to experience a different ward within the hospital dependent on your experience and interests.
During your time in the rural health clinic you will become a valuable member of the supporting staff and experience the challenges and differences between rural and city medical treatments and access.
Visiting Ghana will provide you with limitless opportunities to observe beauty in numerous forms: in the landscapes, in the art scene, and especially in the people. Our placements will bring you to new places along the coast of Africa and into the capital cities, each giving you a different perspective of the country.
International volunteers are housed together in one fit for purpose house in the centre of the village. You will have live-in staff that will cook and clean for you, and there are basic amenities for you to use.
There are four bedrooms, with two showers and you will have a shared living room/kitchen area.
The bedrooms can be either mixed or single sex and have a fan, mosquito netted windows and plugs.
Most household items such as cleaning materials, toiletries and the like are provided by the project. Any further supplies may be purchased at your own discretion at a nearby shopping centre.
There is no running water in the village, and water will be provided for you to drink and wash with.
They’re all so lovely at the clinic, they do all want to help you. And they want you to stay for as long as you can, because I think they like the extra pair of hands there. There’s not many places in the clinic, so we tried everything. We were comfortable enough to go and sort of do our own thing… We really loved it.
Management team – Based in the heart of the village, you will be welcomed and introduced to the project and staff through your on the ground volunteer manager. They will be an active member of the project team, and will help you settle in and get you started. You can rely on your in-country manager to help you with trips and any problems you may have 24/7.
Catering – There will be a live-in cook provided who will prepare local Ghanian cuisine three times a day. This will be basic Ghanian cuisine. Please inform us of any dietary requirements before your departure.
Housekeeper – A live-in housekeeper will be provided to keep your accommodation clean and tidy.
Security- Monitoring of the house 24/7 for your peace of mind with live-in staff.
